Competition Judges

We’ve selected five very different but equally passionate judges for our panel. Between them they have a wide range of industry skills and experience. Each individual has advocated for students and apprentices throughout their career. Equally important though, is that each one is very excited to be judging the competition.

About Sam

With over 12 years’ industry experience Sam has spent the last 3 years as Marketing Manager for Graham The Plumbers’ Merchant. She has consistently championed students and apprentices in our industry. With this in mind she was central in developing the Turning Pro Student & Apprentice Reward scheme. In addition, Sam also recently led Graham’s sponsoring of the InstallerFUTURES event. The event featured a pop-up exhibition which bought students and key suppliers together.

About Celia

Celia Matthews is owner and founder of SNG Publishing, producer of the only magazine for plumbing and heating students – HIP Magazine. Celia is committed to supporting the next generation of plumbers and heating engineers. She has spent the last 11 years working closely with colleges and their lecturers. SNG is renowned for delivering the ever-successful UK Apprentice of the Year competitions. Graham Plumbers’ Merchant are proud to be sponsoring the competition this year.

About Tony

Tony Kite, a 50-year veteran in the plumbing and heating industry, runs his own successful business in the Midlands. Having started as an apprentice he became a college lecturer, leading to a 30-year career in further education. Currently retired from full-time education, Tony offers freelance services for assessing and internal verification to training centres. This keeps him up to date with apprenticeships and training in plumbing, gas and oil heating.

About James

James studied media and completed a HVAC apprenticeship. This made him perfectly qualified to found PlumberParts – an online resource posting weekly videos on everything plumbing related. From honest product reviews and installations as well as plumbing disasters, PlumberParts has grown it’s social following to over 68,000 subscribers on YouTube. Added to this are thousands of followers on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. James has become an inspiration for aspiring plumbers. His content is regularly used by colleges across the country as a training resource.

About Nick

Nick’s drive and passion for the industry has seen him rise throughout the Worcester Bosch group. Starting as Technical Sales Manager in 2008, then moving through Specification Operations to become Regional Sales Manager in 2015.

His current role as National Training Manager is the culmination of his experience and his unique relationships with heating engineers and product installers.

Nick leads the Worcester Bosch training department which trains more than 16,000 heating engineers annually. In addition, he has overseen the £3.5m expansion of its flagship Training Academy, which opened in September this year – marking a new and exciting era.

Judging Criteria

Our judges have chosen the following criteria to base their decision on. The best entries will be those that demonstrate some or all of these:

Longevity – how would winning the competition continue to have an impact, long into the future?

Level of need – how much would winning the competition help? Including detailed information about your current workshop space would be beneficial here.

Learners & lecturers – how would winning impact current students and how would it support the work of the lecturers?

Strength of application – how much effort and attention to detail have you included in your entry? What can make sure your application stands out?

Creativity & differentiation – how could a workshop refresh help your college differentiate itself and be more innovative?
